Born on November 27, 1905, Tommy Dorsey was a famous musician, most noted as the “Sentimental Gentleman of Swing.” His father taught him at a very early age to play the trombone. He developed his own style, denoted by a very up-beat tempo. Dorsey went on to play with many great musicians such as Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, and Glenn Miller. Despite their feuds, he and his brother Jimmy played together for many years. Dorsey embarked on other ventures including publishing a magazine, owning the Casino Gardens, purchasing a radio station, and acting. Dorsey died in Greenwich, CT, on November 25, 1956; he choked to death on food in his sleep.

Sinatra was Tommy Dorsey's lead vocalist, backed by the Pied Pipers on at least ten of his chart hits. The Pied Pipers were a quartet of three men and one woman, who happened to be Jo Stafford. Stafford's first hit came in 1941, a song called Yes Indeed that she sang solo. Tommy Dorsey allegedly fired one of the Pied Pipers in 1942, which led to the departure of the whole group in a show of team unity. With the eventual departure of Sinatra in 1942, Tommy turned to Dick Haymes for vocal leadership. A bit of trivia: a certain trumpet player joined Dorsey after his discharge following World War II. The kid was young, and talent was still raw, but Dorsey saw something he liked. That trumpeter was Carl "Doc" Severinson.

Univercell ~ univercell mobiles

UniverCell Telecommunications India Private Limited, which owns the UniverCell multi-brand mobile phone retail chain, is planning to launch its own brand of mobile phones for the Indian market.

The Chennai-based firm plans to launch its own brand in a year and target the below Rs3,000 segment as these account for over 60 per cent of the total mobile market.

To begin with, the company will import handsets from China. The company is planning to become a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), which will provide mobile phone services but will not have its own licenced frequency allocation of the radio spectrum.

As part its pan India presence, UniverCell will increase the number of outlets from the present 200 to 1,000. It has tied up with retail chains Spencers and Music World outlets and is now in talks with other retail chains for setting up about 300 shop-in-shops in three months.

The company, for the year 2007-08, registered a turnover of Rs350 crore and has set a target of Rs500 crore for this fiscal.

It is looking to increase its market share in retail mobile from the present 20 per cent to 40 per cent.

For the Braciole:
2 c bread cubes (cut from day old bread w/crusts removed)
1 1/2 c milk
2 hard boiled eggs, chopped coarse
1/4 c chopped Ital parsley
1/4 c freshly grated Parm Reggiano
1/4 c raisins
1/4 c toasted pine nuts
1 clove garlic chopped fine
2 lbs beef bottom round cut into 12 slices-about 1/2" thick
1/4 lb prosciutto
1/4 lb provolone cut into 1/4x1/4 sticks
Salt/freshly grnd pepper

Sauce:
3T extra Vir Olive oil
2 small onions chopped
2 garlic cloves chopped fine
1 35oz can San Marzano tomatoes
1/2c dry red wine
3T tom. paste
2 bay leaves
Water as needed
Salt
Crushed red pepper

Combine bread/milk-let sit 20-30 min, squeeze excess -add to mixing bowl. Add chopped egg,parsley,Parm,raisins,pine nuts and garlic-mix well-set aside. With "toothed" side of meat mallet pound each slice of beef to 1/4" thick. Top beef with slice of prosciutto, spread w/2 T of bread stuffing,stick of prov. Fold and roll, secure w/toothpick, season w/salt and pepper.

Sauce-heat olive oil, add onions/garlic cook til wilted. Add as many braciole as will fit in single layer and brown-repeat til all browned. Empty tomatoes in a bowl and squeeze til coarsely chopped. Add wine to pot, tomatoes,bring to a boil, tomato paste and bay leaves. Simmer adding water as nec. to cover rolls-cook 3 hrs.
